Between Two Faces
In this sound poem, I explore the boundary between laughter and crying, whisper and void, sound and silence. I work with recordings of my own voice, where real laughter, tears, and sighs intertwine in an atmosphere that transcends language.
Through experimentation with loops, effects, and modulations, the voice becomes substance and vibration, revealing a raw, sensory language. Sound poetry is not just phonetics—it is an immersion into the musicality of the body and emotion. Between Two Faces dwells in that threshold where sound is not just meaning, but experience.
Spiral
In this sound poem, I intertwine my voice with synthesizers, guitar, darbuka, keyboard, and metals, incorporating fragments of prayers I captured in Morocco and Arabic words like salam, sakina, and Al haa9a.
Inspired by my poem, Spiral evokes a journey without haste, where the snail leaves its honeyed trail and moves between the visible and the hidden:
"Tears tracing the scent of their path
The snail leaves a trail that tastes of honey as it travels...
It spins, spins, spins the snail."
Here, sound is both passage and memory, an echo that repeats and renews endlessly.
Dimensions
In this sound poem, I merge my voice with the percussion of the darbuka, loops, and reverb effects, creating an atmosphere that transitions between two languages: Arabic and Spanish. Inspired by my poem Dimensions, the piece reflects the journey of a girl who, upon finding a mirror, becomes trapped between worlds and dimensions, seeking the meaning of her existence.
Through the interaction of sounds, I explore how words become bridges between different realities. The echoes and resonances of the voices, combined with the rhythms and textures of the percussion, create a soundscape that mirrors the process of self-discovery and transition. The sound poem takes the listener to a place of introspection, where each sound is a reflection of an inner journey towards awakening and understanding oneself.
Nights of Ramadan
For my contribution to the 2013 World Listening Day from the World Listening Project, I climbed to the rooftop of Tetouan, seeking a deeper connection with the sounds that inhabit the city. Amid the heights of the medina and the cafés, I allowed myself to be enveloped by the chirping of birds at dusk, the echo of prayers rising from the mosques during the nights of Ramadan, and the soft hum of everyday life intertwining in the air.
This sound experiment is my tribute to the power of listening: an immersion in the unique atmosphere that only the city can offer. It’s a reminder of the magic that resides in the simplest sounds, those we often overlook but that make up the silent symphony of our surroundings. An invitation to pause and listen attentively, to immerse oneself in the soundscape of life unfolding around us.
Historia de una casa - History of a House
"Historia de una casa" is a sound poem that explores memory, nostalgia, and identity through sounds, voices, and effects. It begins with a music box evoking childhood, and throughout the piece, my voice intertwines with songs from my youth, those my father taught me to play on the guitar. The synthesizers, loops, reverbs, and effects of old radios immerse the listener in a timeless space that reflects the passage of time and the emotional connection with home.
The use of electric guitar, percussion, and the repetition of words in Arabic and Spanish adds a deep layer of meaning, merging languages and cultures. Fragments of the poem I wrote, Historia de una casa, enrich the work, highlighting the longing for home, memories, and a return to childhood. The poem culminates with a loop of my son's name, like a lullaby, closing the circle of this sound journey back to emotional home.
It is a piece that goes beyond memories, creating a sensory experience that unites the past, present, and the deepest roots of what "home" truly means.
Después de morir - After Death
"Después de morir" is a sonic exploration where words like soul, essence, time intertwine in a sequence that moves between repetition and silence, evoking the continuity of life beyond death. The poem uses a variety of sounds, from isolated, evocative words to bells that slowly emerge, gradually intensifying as the word One is repeated, symbolizing unity with the eternal. The gradual rise of the bells reflects the process of transcendence, the journey toward unity, until they slowly fade, taking the listener into silence and contemplation, in a dance between form and void, the physical and the spiritual.
Sentidos - Sensations
In Sensations, I explore the tones of my voice and its sounds, from the most superficial to the deepest. I play with vibrations and mouth sounds that evoke the freedom of childhood, creating an atmosphere full of sensations. I use loops, laughter, and experimentation with different languages to shape a piece that fuses the meaningful and the chaotic.
The sound poem reflects the search for identity, intertwining concepts of body, words, and essence, inspired by my written poem Sensations. Throughout the piece, the voice transforms into a play of sounds, inviting us to dive into introspection, ultimately concluding in a deep stillness that dissolves all sound.
Dimensiones de una muñeca - Dimensions of a Doll
This sound poem explores the soul’s journey through different dimensions in search of the absolute. It begins with three apocalyptic sounds that symbolize an end, but in reality, mark a new beginning. The figure of a teenager dressed in white, holding a doll in her hand, represents the soul returning to its root.
Throughout the poem, the soul faces obstacles and refracted paths, represented by the sounds of footsteps and dances. The process of death and resurrection is felt in the rhythms of life, while a simple breath symbolizes both the beginning and the end of everything.
"Dimensions of a Doll" is an auditory journey about constant transformation and the search for the essence of being.
